Synopsis:
The Brethren
as a denomination holds as one of its key fundamentals the priesthood
of all believers. But what does this term mean? Where and when
did this term become part of Christian usage and understanding?
Are there valid scriptural references to substantiate this teaching?
Other denominations
that hold to this view include the Baptists and the Presbyterians.
The Brethren movement especially was emphatic about having no
distinction between the clergy (priesthood) and the laity (the
general Christian populace).
This four
part series introduces the key aspects of this teaching and its
biblical basis. We will also do a brief survey to see how this
teaching has developed since the Reformation (16th century). Lastly,
we will examine how the Brethren applies this teaching in their
church life: the strengths, weaknesses and potential dangers and
abuses as translated into its form of brethren governance.
