SG Bible Study #9

The Challenge of Missions

Suggested Opening Song:
We’ve a story to tell to the nations
That shall turn their hearts to the right
A story of truth and sweetness
A story of peace and light
A story of peace and light

For the darkness shall turn to dawning
And the dawning to noonday bright
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth
The kingdom of Love and Light

We’ve a song to be sung to the nations
That shall lift their hearts to the Lord
A song that shall conquer evil
And shatter the spear and sword
And shatter the spear and sword

We’ve a message to give to the nations
That the Lord who reigneth above
Hath sent us His Son to save us
And show us that God is love

We’ve a Saviour to show to the nations
Who the path of sorrow has trod
That all of the world’s great peoples
Might come to the truth of God

Sharing as desired on an individual basis (Optional)
How has the past weeks been?  Were you acting as salt to the earth and light to the world?  An influence for God or being influenced towards wrong-doing?

Prayer
‘I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.’  Galatians 2:20

Scripture Reading
Isa. 6:8,9; Mt. 28:18-20

Introduction:
What we have today is a world population, consisting of precious lives whom our Lord Jesus came to seek and save.  God desires that no man perish but that all should come to the knowledge of the truth.

Discussion:

  1. Look up Matt. 9:37.  What does that verse tell us?

  2. Mt. 28:18-20 is commonly called ‘The Great Commission’ passage.  What are some of the things that strike you in this call from Jesus?

  3. What do you think should be the kind of motivations that one should have in being involved in sharing the gospel?  2Cor. 5:14 may be the answer.  What do you think?  Should that be the primary reason?  If so, what are some other secondary reasons?

The following is a set of questions raised by brother A. Othniel, a supported missionary of Bethesda Chapel.  It is not so much a Bible Study but that of questions to generate discussions on decision-making regarding missions.

  1. Have you ever considered working overseas as a missionary?

  2. If you had the opportunity, where in the world would you want to go as missionary?  Why?

  3. What do you think missionaries should do as part of their ministry?  Abroad?  In Singapore?

  4. In what ways do you or could you support overseas ministries?

  5. How can you see yourself, the world and others differently when you encounter someone from another country?

  6. Do you agree with the statement that being in another country changes your world viewHow?  Why?

  7. How do you encourage your children to be involved in missions through family activities?

  8. Would you support your child if he/she desires to become a missionary?
